Polish in Place fixes spelling and grammar in the text box you are already typing in. This page explains exactly what happens to that text.
There is no server. The developer of this extension never receives your text, your API keys, or any information about you. There is no analytics, no tracking, no advertising, and no account.
| How you use it | Where your text goes |
|---|---|
| Normally (the default) |
Processed entirely on your own computer by the language model built into Google Chrome. The text is never transmitted over the network and never leaves your device. |
| With your own API key (optional, off unless you add one) |
If your computer cannot run Chrome's on-device model, or you choose to use a cloud model instead, you can enter your own API key for Google (Gemini) or Anthropic (Claude). The text you polish is then sent directly from your browser to that service, and to nobody else. That service's own privacy policy and data retention terms apply to it. Nothing is sent anywhere unless you have entered a key yourself. |
| Item | Stored where |
|---|---|
| Your API key, if you choose to add one |
chrome.storage.local on this computer only. It is deliberately not placed in
Chrome's synced storage, so it is never uploaded to your Google account. It is transmitted
only to the AI service it belongs to, as that service's authentication header.
|
| Your preferences (chosen service and model, whether to keep the on-device model loaded) |
chrome.storage.sync. If you have Chrome sync switched on, Chrome copies these
settings between your own signed-in browsers. They contain no personal information and no
text you have polished.
|
| Text you have polished | Nowhere. It is not logged, saved, or retained after the request finishes. |
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
activeTab and scripting | To read the text in the box you are focused on and write the corrected version back into it, only on the tab you are on, and only at the moment you press the shortcut or choose the right click menu item. |
contextMenus | To add the "Polish in Place" right click item. |
storage | To remember your preferences and your optional API key. |
clipboardRead | So the popup can pre-fill with whatever you just copied. |
clipboardWrite | To hand you the polished text when a page will not let the extension edit its text box directly. |
offscreen | To hold Chrome's on-device model between polishes. The model needs a document context and takes about ten seconds to load, so it is kept in a hidden page rather than reloaded on every request. |
| Network access to Google or Anthropic | An optional permission. It is not requested at install. Chrome only asks for it if and when you save an API key. |
The suggestion box on the support page of this website is separate from the extension. If you use it, what you type (and your name and email, if you add them) is sent through the form service Web3Forms to the developer's email inbox, and nowhere else. It is used only to read your idea and, if you left an email, to reply. The extension itself never sends anything to this form.
This extension is not directed at children and collects no information from anyone.
